Fractals and Market Self-Similarity
Self-similarity across timeframes, why degree is the whole point, and where the idea stops being useful.
Fractals, introduced by the scientific community in 1975, gave rise to a geometry of self-similarity that fits complex systems including the financial markets. The key property is form: self-similar formations recur at different sizes, which lets an analyst reason about degree and proportion in market structure.
- Self-similarity. Complex systems such as the economy, the stock market, and the cryptocurrency market move through alternating phases of advance and decline that build into similar patterns of increasing size.
- Degree and proportion. The central takeaway is degree. Reading structure means knowing which proportion or degree of move is in play, which sets the context for any signal.
- Grounding for analysis. A sell-side user need not understand the foundation, but an analyst or a user of market analysis should know the grounding on which the predictions rest.
Where this breaks down
- Self-similarity describes structure after the fact and does not by itself fix the degree in real time, which is where most fractal and wave methods become subjective.
- Treating markets as cleanly self-similar can overstate regularity that breaks down at regime boundaries.
